Wishful Thinking ##ATOZCHALLENGE- W
"If I had that kind of enterprises I would never hire like he did, "Sujoy lamented. "All his decisions are so laced with a minion fixation. He just wants people to agree with him."
The 'he' Sujoy was talking about was SK Sinha, the CEO of a multi-million crore enterprise. The man had a gregarious self-eulogosing personality. The people he worked with were quick to identify the fact that he had a formidable ego which if left unstroked would swing an extreme negative direction. It would lead to public ridicule and humiliation. Basically, his minions, some of them underqualified, weren't spoilt for choices. Either stand by him or risk reputation loss.
"There is a cost attached to arm-twisting people into agreeing with you."
"Um hmm!" responded Shikha, her focus more on clicking a selfie with the Korean Ramen that was the hot cake of that cafe.
Sujoy didn't notice her superficial acknowledgement. Instead he went on with his tirade. "Whatever it is that SK wishes to accomplish, his attitude is going to be a bottleneck."
Then out came his actual sentiments. "If I were SK, I would take the hiring part very serious. In fact I would readily hire people who disagreed with me. Because they would teach me so much more than I already know."
Shikha slurped in a mouthful of Ramen and looked up to him and smiled.
"If someone lacked the skill, I would identify the gap and help them grow rather than dismissing blankly. Dont you think so, Shikhu?"
"Yeuh" Shikha managed to speak between mouthfuls of Ramen.
"I would take risks, guide people in the right direction and always put my customer ahead of me."
"You'll remain a salesman all your life." Words as slippery as Ramen flowed out of Shikhas mouth.
She stopped her Ramen slurping. Her eyws widened as she looked up at Sujoy.
"What?"
Sujoy morale fell to the floor with a soundless thud.
"He said that to you in your last appraisal right?"
"Ohhhh! Y-yes he did. Such a cynic no?"
"Yes, he didn't bother to think how this would affect you. Even you would have some aspirations from your job."
"Yes. Yes. Exactly!"
"Suj, see how much happiness a Yes brings to us. All of us need validation. SK does too. Maybe he's had to take a lot of tough decisions. Maybe praise was rare. It may not always have been ego."
"M-maybe."
"It's okay to wish you were him, but are you sure you completely understand everything about him?"
"I guess not Shikhu."
"See Suj, all of us get what we are destined for provided we work hard in our here and now. You do that. Focus on being the best salesman. Take pride in your work. Let them make you that timeless seller who became a beacon for others. One day SK may be forced to eat his words if they meant any malice."
"You're way better at talking strategy than I, Shikhu."
"Ramen helps me think better, lol!"
They both shared a friendly hug and walked back home feeling lighter and much more focused.
